Understanding Melanoma

Melanoma is usually, but not always, a cancer of the skin. It begins in the cells that produce the pigment melanin that colors the skin, hair and eyes. Since most pigment cells are found in the skin, melanoma is commonly a “skin cancer.” Sometimes, it occurs in the eye or in a mucous membrane such as the inside of the nose, the throat or even the genitals.
