The cure for melanoma begins with me.
I was diagnosed with Melanoma in May 2020, right after my 30th birthday. Even though I grew up hearing the statistics – 1 in 5 people will get skin cancer; having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk for Melanoma, etc – I still never thought it would happen to me. Fortunately, a lifetime of dermatology appointments and a family history armed me with the tools to recognize a suspicious mole, and I caught mine early. It was an alarming wake-up call. Here’s a new-to-me stat: Melanoma is now the third most common form of cancer in men and women aged 15 to 29.
It seems like most Coloradans know someone with skin cancer. Because of our altitude and love of outdoor activities, we are exposed to a higher UV incidence than others in the rest of the country. As a result, without the appropriate sun protection, we are at an increased risk of skin cancers, including Melanoma.
Melanoma is the deadliest and fastest growing form of skin cancer. Significant advancement has been made in the past few years in improved detection, new drug treatments and better survival rates. This progress has been built on the breakthroughs made fighting other types of cancers, as well as the existing foundation of melanoma research. Miles for Melanoma is a fun way to help support the mission of the Melanoma Research Foundation - finding a cure for Melanoma!
