Team Born to Run
The incredible, one-of-a-kind, Brooklyn born and raised, music-loving, sports-loving...the list goes on, Dr. Stuart Handelsman - my dad - lost his fight with melanoma on March 10, 2022. He was a legend. He cared for so many not only as a kidney doctor for hundreds of patients, but also for his many friends, family and truly anyone who knew him. His laugh was contagious and brought so much joy to people around him. Stuart also had many hobbies, interests and passions, one of which was running. He ran solo and with friends and family over the years. My dad and I did many runs and races together (including the epic Peachtree Road Race on July 4th in Atlanta) and he was the reason I got into running back in the day. During many of his runs, he was surely rocking out to his hero, Bruce Springsteen. Anyone that knew my dad knew all about his love (slash obsession) for the The Boss. So, here we are, Team Born to Run has been formed to honor an inspirational man. We look forward to gathering together on May 6th to celebrate his life while raising money for this important cause!
Melanoma is the deadliest and fastest growing form of skin cancer and we all want a cure to be found soon. Miles for Melanoma is the way people come together to take action and help support this fight and the mission of the Melanoma Research Foundation.
Every step matters and every step counts. Significant advancement has been made in the past few years in improved detection, new drug treatments and better survival rates. This progress has been built on the breakthroughs made fighting other types of cancers, as well as the existing foundation of melanoma research.
There is more to be done and a long way to go, but the finish line is in sight. The energy, enthusiasm and encouragement from patients, survivors, families, friends, caregivers, and the medical community impacts many lives and many future.
